Best MikroTik Router for a Hotspot Business in Kenya (2026)
The best MikroTik router for a hotspot business in Kenya depends on how many people you serve. For a first site, the RB951 at about KSh 7,500 to 8,000 is the one we recommend most: the busiest RB951 in our billing system carries 56 people at once. The hAP lite at about KSh 4,000 works for testing the business. The L009 and RB4011 are for when you are growing into a real ISP.
Don't overbuy and don't underbuy. Buy for the stage your business is at now, with a little room to grow. Below are the five routers we get asked about most, with Kenyan prices and real user numbers. Whichever one you pick, Bitwave's hotspot billing runs on all of them, and we set the router up for you.
This guide is based on our TikTok comparisons of the hAP lite, RB951 and RB4011, the RB951 for beginners and the RB4011 for scaling.
Which MikroTik router is best for a hotspot business in Kenya?
For most new hotspot owners in Kenya, the RB951 is the best MikroTik router. It costs about KSh 7,500 to 8,000, has 128 MB of RAM and built-in WiFi, and the busiest one in our system carries 56 people at once. Start smaller with a hAP lite only if you are testing. Move to the L009 or RB4011 as you grow.
| Router | Price in Kenya (KSh) | RAM | Ethernet ports | Built-in WiFi | Users (our numbers) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| hAP lite | about 4,000 | 32 MB | 4 × 100 Mbps | Yes | 28 at once on RouterOS 6, 7 on RouterOS 7 |
| RB951 | 7,500–8,000 | 128 MB | 5 × 100 Mbps | Yes | 56 at once; 50–70 in practice |
| hEX | about 8,000–9,000 | 256 MB | 5 × Gigabit | No | not in our comparison |
| L009 | about 16,000–21,000 | 512 MB | 8 × Gigabit + SFP | No | sits between the RB951 and RB4011 |
| RB4011 | about 24,000 | 1 GB | 10 × Gigabit + SFP+ | No | 200–500 |
"Users" here means people online at the same moment, not total customers. Peaks for the hAP lite and RB951 come from the busiest router of each model in our billing system. We cover the full data in how many users a MikroTik router can handle.
Prices move between shops. Call two suppliers before you buy, and confirm the exact model number on the quote.
Is the hAP lite good enough to start a hotspot?
The hAP lite is good enough to test the hotspot business, and on RouterOS 6 it can do more than people expect. It costs about KSh 4,000, the cheapest MikroTik that runs a proper hotspot. The busiest hAP lite in our system carried 28 people at once on RouterOS 6. On RouterOS 7 the best one managed 7.
That gap is the main thing to know about this router. It has only 32 MB of RAM, and RouterOS 7 leaves less room for the hotspot. If your hAP lite came with RouterOS 7, change it to RouterOS 6 before you put customers on it.
We still treat it as a hobbyist or beginner router. It is fine for finding out whether people in your area will buy WiFi. Once you have regular customers, plan the move to an RB951. Our hotspot business cost breakdown builds a full starter kit around the hAP lite.
Why is the RB951 the best MikroTik for beginners?
The RB951 is the first MikroTik you can comfortably run in production. It costs KSh 7,500 to 8,000, has 128 MB of RAM (four times the hAP lite) and carries 50 to 70 people in practice. The busiest RB951 in our billing system peaked at 56 people online at once.
It suits small estates, shops, student hostels and a row of rentals. It has WiFi built in, so a single plot can run off the router alone, and you add access points as you spread out.
The limit is its ports. The common RB951Ui-2HnD has 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, so it cannot pass more than about 100 Mbps from your internet line. That is fine on a 20 or 50 Mbps line. If you're paying for 200 Mbps, you need a router with Gigabit ports. We explain this in why a MikroTik port runs at 100 Mbps instead of 1000.
When should you choose the hEX instead?
Choose the hEX when your internet line is faster than 100 Mbps but your network is still small. It has five Gigabit ports and 256 MB of RAM, and Nairobi listings put it at about KSh 8,000 to 9,000. It has no WiFi, so every customer connects through separate access points.
That makes it a different kind of router from the RB951 rather than a straight upgrade. If you already use access points, or you're wiring a few buildings, the Gigabit ports matter more than built-in WiFi. If you want one box to route and broadcast WiFi on a single plot, the RB951 is still the simpler buy.
We didn't include the hEX in our capacity comparison, so we don't quote a user number for it here.
Is the MikroTik L009 worth it for a growing hotspot?
The L009 is worth it once you have outgrown an RB951 but don't need an RB4011 yet. It has 512 MB of RAM, eight Gigabit ports and an SFP cage. It sits between the RB951 and RB4011 in both power and price: about KSh 16,000 to 21,000 in Kenya, against roughly KSh 24,000 for an RB4011.
The busiest router in our billing system is an RB5009 carrying 78 people at once. Looking at that load, an L009 would probably have done the same job for less money. Before buying a big router, check whether your network needs one. Our MikroTik L009 price guide has the full specs and when to pick it.
When do you need an RB4011?
You need an RB4011 when you are an established ISP with hundreds of users, PPPoE or hotspot, and want room to keep growing. It has 1 GB of RAM, about 30 times the hAP lite, ten Gigabit ports and a 10G SFP+ port. We put it at 200 to 500 people. It costs about KSh 24,000.
We used an RB4011 in our first ISP business and the CPU never went above 9%. It is more router than a single hotspot needs, but if you are running estates, a campus or a growing PPPoE network, the money is well spent.
How do you choose the right MikroTik for your stage?
Match the router to the number of people online at your busiest hour and the speed of your internet line. Price comes after that. A router that is too small slows everyone down in the evening. One that is too big ties up money you could spend on access points or backup power.
- Testing the business, a few customers: hAP lite on RouterOS 6.
- First real hotspot, up to about 50 people at once, line under 100 Mbps: RB951.
- Small network on a line faster than 100 Mbps, using access points: hEX.
- Growing past the RB951, several access points or PPPoE: L009.
- Established ISP with hundreds of users: RB4011.
When you upgrade, look at the old router's CPU and memory at 8 or 9 PM first. If both have room and customers still complain, the problem is probably the internet line or the access points, and a new router won't fix it.
